Ever wonder why cats do weird things?
- Why do they knead on you?
- Why do they paw at their water dish?
- Why do they zoom around the house?
- Why do they chew plastic?
At WHPS, we consider ourselves feline experts. Let’s just tackle one cat behavior at a time, starting with the latter- chewing plastic. As you know, cats are very proud and like for us to devote a page to each behavior. Since they are our “masters”, we must comply. So, we’ll take a look at cats eating weird things. Why do cats eat things they’re not supposed to? According to a cat expert at Wisconsin Pet Care, Siamese and Burmese cats are the most prone breeds of cat to suckle on fabric or chew on grocery bags”. Some believe it is some type of compulsion that drives them to do this behavior. Other experts say plastic bags carry scents from the outside and are made with corn starch, all of which bring out the exploratory nature of your cat. It is very dangerous for cats to eat plastic, ribbon and certain types of plants. One of our clients said his cat became seriously injured after consuming parts of the stuffing in a couch. Another almost electrocuted himself by chewing on wire. Fortunately, the cats got to the vet in time and it required foreign body surgery to remove the stuffing. Be sure you keep your cat(s) safe by removing any potential threats (yarn, string, plastic bags, plants (especially Lilly’s) from your home (or hiding them under lock and key) from your cat(s).
