The brisk weather we have now is bringing out the inner hiker in me. Looking for some fun places to go hiking with your dog?
Here are some fun local spots to go:
West Hartford Reservoir (off Rte 4). If you go a little further down Rte. 195, on the left you’ll hit the entrance to Heublein Tower. There’s a nice hike up to the top of the tower.
Penwood State Park in Bloomfield – 560 Simsbury Rd, Bloomfield, CT 06002. You can take the loop around the park or hike up various trails within the park.
About 1/4 mile down the road from Penwood on the left hand side is Heublein Tower. It’s a fun hike up to the tower or if you want more of a scenic route, follow the path which hugs the cliff. Wonderful views here and at the top.
If you’re up for a road trip, try:
Sleeping Giant State Park, north of New Haven. The Tower Trail is a gentle climb to the Mount Carmel summit and once on top Scout can climb the concrete ramps of the old Norman-style square stone tower there. Plenty of other trails are available. Most are wide and easy to walk, others call for rock scrambling.
White Memorial in Litchfield, CT has great hiking. Here’s a convenient link to their site http://www.whitememorialcc.org
