Why you should hide food from your cat!
Although our cats have been domesticated for years, and clearly loves life lounging on the couch cuddled up for their noon time nap, we must not forget their natural instincts. Vint Virga who specializes in animal behavioral medicine has discovered that our household cats can live a more rewarding life if we allow them to engage in natural behaviors like foraging for food.
Think about it, if our cats lived in the wild they would be required to hunt, search and find their food which is inherent to their biology. It is important that we as humans not deprive animals of being animals. We can achieve this by allowing our cats “experience the wild” by hiding food in different places around the house creating a stimulating fun experience. (not your cupboards, but behind a chair, etc.)
This is especially helpful if you have a cat that has a tendency to scratch on furniture or other fixtures. Hiding food will keep your kitty preoccupied and aroused by the hunt making for a more interesting and engaged life. If you make a habit of hiding not only food but toys in different areas of the house every day we can enrich our cat’s lives leading to a healthier and happier kitty!
